  • What is a listserv? A listserv is a mailing list software program that automatically distributes email on a particular subject. Listservs allow you to communicate with other people who have subscribed to the same list. When you submit a message to the server, your message is relayed to all those on the listserv. You receive messages from other participants via E-mail. It is similar to computer conferencing (or chat rooms), but a listserv is asynchronous.
  • Listserv Etiquette: Here are some tips for practicing listserv etiquette.
    • Keep messages brief
    • Summarize the message you are responding to
    • Stick to intended topics of the listserv
    • Don’t use all uppercase
    • Include an opening and a closing to your message
    • Differentiate between public and private messages
